a new weekly roundup by me
It’s hard not to be in a graduate or doctoral program. I still want to be involved in Classics and proactive about reading new scholarship, but I’ve had difficulty finding the motivation. So, I’ve created a weekly roundup of media I consumed. HOPEFULLY, it encourages me to stay on top of things. I’ll try to organize things by content type: academic, lifestyle, recreational reading, etc.
academic articles:
- Time and memory in Carthage by Nandini Das – This article is possibly one of my new favorite pieces of academic work. It laid things out clearly, but was still complex and required me to stretch my thinking to understand. I believe the author is not a Classicist, and I enjoyed the chronological range of sources used for her argument.
- Birthday Rituals: Friends and Patrons in Roman Poetry and Cult by Kathryn Argetsinger – I loved reading this. I had never thought about birthdays being a ritual, nor had I even considered that birthday poetry could be considered a genre. It was a great read, and even BETTER, it helped me understand the client-patron system a little more.
books
- Piranesi by Susanna Clarke – I’m not super far into this book, but so far, I can appreciate the quasi-anthropological POV the main character provides. I’ve heard awesome things about this book, so I’m excited to read it.
- We Do What We Do in the Dark by Michelle Hart – I honestly don’t love this book so far. The prose is pleasant, but the pacing is not doing it for me, nor is the plot. To be honest, I don’t think I read a synopsis before I picked this up, so that’s my fault. But, to be fair to myself, it did have a deceptively interesting cover.

newsletters:
- girlboss newsletter – embarrassingly enough, I love to read this newsletter for product recommendations and keep engaged with other professional women my age.
- internet princess – Rayne Fisher-Quann has some hot takes. Even though I can’t entirely agree with everything she says, I enjoy her writing style.
