My Community Engagement Workshop at CANE Summer Institute

What is the CANE Summer Institute?

A couple of months ago, I was asked if I’d be interested in sharing my research on Classics and Community Engagement with the CANE Summer Institute. Um, DUH!

Unfortunately, I’ve been feeling quite left out of the field now that I’ve left my teaching position. But, I’m excited to share the blurb for my workshop and the registration form!

If you’re unfamiliar, the CANE Summer Institute is an annual, weeklong series of lectures, mini-courses, and workshops. This year, the Institute is hybrid. Some events will be at Brown University in Providence, and some will be on Zoom. It’s a great initiative if you’re new to the field of Classics. You get access to interesting things going on in the field AND there are scholarships available for boarding.

This will be my first time teaching at a Summer Institute session. But – I have presented several times at the CANE Annual Meeting. In 2019, I presented with Professors Roberta Stewart and Dominic Machado on the Classics and Social Justice Panel.

In 2021, I presented my research in a presentation titled “Classics in the Classroom: Reimagining the Iliad in Worcester”

My Community Engagement Workshop

Wednesday, July 13, 2022 3:00-4:00 pm (virtual)
Classics in our Communities: Best Practices for Engagement
Maia Lee-Chin, Boston Public Schools

Among the various outreach programs that aim to get the public involved in Classics, how do we know what kinds of programs are desired by or beneficial to the community they would serve? We will learn about, then reflect upon, community engagement best practices during this workshop. You’ll have the opportunity to communicate with other educators trying to implement these best practices in their own programming, as well as share your own experiences and struggles with this work.
